Welcome to the English Unit of Kolej Matrikulasi Selangor, a team of passionate and experienced educators committed to developing students’ English language communicative competence and preparing them for future academic and professional success. Guided by the principles of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), our unit strives to nurture confident, competent, and independent English language users who are ready to meet the demands of university education and the global community.

The English Unit consists of 23 dedicated and experienced lecturers who continuously work together to provide meaningful, engaging, and student-centred learning experiences. Through interactive lessons, collaborative activities, technology-enhanced learning, and continuous support, we aim to create a positive and supportive environment where students can actively develop their listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills.

Our teaching approach emphasises not only language accuracy but also effective communication, critical thinking, creativity, and real-world application of English. By integrating communicative and learner-centred methodologies into our classrooms, we encourage students to become active participants in their own learning journey while building the confidence to use English in academic, social, and professional contexts.

The English Unit is responsible for conducting teaching, learning, and assessment for the following courses:

• WE013 & WE023 (Sistem Dua Semester – SDS) 
• DE013 & DE023 (Sistem Empat Semester – SES) 

These courses are carefully designed to support students in achieving CEFR B2 level or higher, which serves as an important foundation for tertiary studies and lifelong learning. In addition to classroom instruction, the unit also conducts various academic support activities, enrichment programmes, workshops, and language development initiatives to further enhance students’ proficiency and learning experience.

Objectives of the English Unit

• To ensure all students successfully pass the English courses offered by the unit, with at least 10% of students achieving Grade A excellence.
• To equip all students with the necessary English language proficiency to achieve a minimum of Band 3 in the Malaysian University English Test (MUET). 
• To continuously enhance the competency, professionalism, and instructional excellence of English lecturers through lifelong learning, professional development, collaboration, and reflective teaching practices.

The English Unit is one of the academic units under the Department of Professional and Literary Studies at Kolej Matrikulasi Selangor. The unit plays an important role in supporting students’ academic development by strengthening their English language proficiency and communicative competence in preparation for higher education and future professional demands.

The English Unit offers the following courses:

• WE013 – English 1 
• WE023 – English 2 

English is a compulsory subject for all students enrolled in the Matriculation Programme. Through these courses, students are provided with comprehensive exposure to essential language skills and communicative practices that are necessary for academic success, university readiness, and effective interaction in real-life situations.

The teaching and learning process is guided by the Post-Secondary English Language Curriculum Framework (PSELCF), which serves as the main framework for English language education at the post-secondary level in Malaysia. PSELCF emphasises the development of communicative competence, higher-order thinking skills, learner autonomy, collaboration, digital literacy, and real-world language use. It also aligns closely with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) to ensure students are equipped with internationally benchmarked language proficiency and the skills needed for tertiary education and future careers.

Students will be guided and trained in various language skills, including:

• Listening Skills 
• Speaking Skills 
• Reading Skills 
• Writing Skills 

The courses are designed to help students achieve at least CEFR B2 proficiency level. Emphasis is placed on student-centred learning approaches that encourage active participation, meaningful communication, independent learning, and the practical use of English in both academic and social contexts.

The English Unit is supported by a team of 23 qualified and experienced lecturers who specialise in the field of English language education. Our lecturers hold academic qualifications from both local and international universities and are committed to delivering quality teaching and continuous academic support to students. Through their expertise, dedication, and collaborative efforts, the unit continuously strives to create a conducive and engaging learning environment that promotes students’ confidence, motivation, and language development.

In addition to classroom teaching and assessment, the English Unit also actively organises academic enrichment programmes, workshops, language activities, and professional development initiatives aimed at enhancing both student achievement and lecturer professionalism.
